How it works: secured business loans
A secured business loan is borrowing backed by a charge over property or other assets. Security can mean a larger loan or a longer term than unsecured lending, but the asset is at risk if repayments are not kept up.
Lenders value the security and usually lend up to a set share of that value, so allow for valuation and legal work. Read how to compare business loan lenders before weighing a secured offer against an unsecured one.
Points Nationwide Finance publishes that are worth knowing:
- Requires personal and/or corporate guarantees to support the agreement.
- May take a legal charge or unilateral notice over residential or business property, and a debenture over company assets.
- Unsecured options are stated to be available only to listed companies, FTSE 250 companies, charities, non-profits, CICs and other associations.
- Says a full credit check happens offline only if you accept a formal offer.
- Says early settlement is allowed with a discount for settling early.
Security and guarantees
Personal and/or corporate guarantees are mandatory. Depending on loan size and credit status, charges may be registered against residential or business property. Its FAQ says personal assets are at risk only to the extent of the security or undertakings signed. Early repayment is allowed without penalty.
Is Nationwide Finance regulated?
Nationwide Finance’s site states: “We are a Direct Funder - Nationwide Finance Limited - Company Registration No: 12199793. We are solely a direct lender and not a broker or introducer. We do not provide regulated consumer agreements. We are owned by Moneycore Asset Management Limited.”
Protections differ by borrower type and loan size. Most lending to limited companies is not regulated consumer credit, so read the agreement and ask the lender what applies to you.

Applying through a broker
Capzy is a credit broker, not a lender, and gets paid by the lender. One application lets your business compare options across lenders, so you can weigh this kind of facility against the alternatives. You can check your funding options with a soft search that does not affect your credit score. A full application to a lender may involve a hard search, and any offer is subject to status and lender criteria.
